England and Gloucestershire cricketer to present press awards

Gloucestershire captain Jon Lewis is due to present the trophies to winners at today’s EDF Energy South West Media Awards.

The experienced cricketer, who has represented England in Twenty20, One Day internationals and in one Test, will present the trophies to the winners of 16 different categories, marking the best in journalism across the South West, at the ceremony at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol.

Lewis made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire in 1995 and last year captained the side to the Pro40 Division Two title. He is currently in his benefit year and will be able to donate £500 from EDF Energy to the charity of his choice.

He said: “I’m delighted to be presenting the trophies at the EDF Energy South West Media Awards. At Gloucestershire we have very good relationships with the local media.

“Newspapers, radio and regional television all play a very important role for clubs of all sports, serving as a vital link between clubs and supporters.

“I will be donating the £500 from EDF Energy to the Ability Sports Association, the charity I am supporting in my benefit year.

“They provide coached sports and leisure activities across the South West for disabled and disadvantaged children and adults and, by supporting them, it’s giving me a great opportunity to help support a range of local communities.”

The right-arm medium fast pace bowler was part of England’s One Day International Squad that took on Pakistan in 2006 and was also part of this year’s World Cup squad, though he did not play.

His first international appearance was in a Twenty20 win over Australia, where he took four wickets for 24 runs from his four overs, in a 100-run victory, in June 2005. He made his One Day International debut a few days later in England’s win against Bangladesh at The Oval, taking three wickets for 32 runs from ten overs.

He made his test debut against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge on June 2, 2006, taking a wicket with his fourth delivery. He also played in the early stages of the Commonwealth Bank Series against New Zealand and Australia this year, before succumbing to injury.

EDF Energy already has links with Gloucestershire, through its sponsorship of the club’s education centre.

Dan Pritchard, EDF Energy’s South West external communications executive, said: “We’re really grateful that Jon has given up his time to help with the awards ceremony.

“We’re also delighted that the Ability Sports Association will benefit. We already have close links with Gloucestershire and are committed to supporting sport at a grassroots level.”

The awards cover daily and weekly newspapers and broadcasters in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Bath, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, and are held in association with holdthefrontpage.co.uk.
