End-of-the-pier show

There’s an end-of-the-pier show with a difference going on in Bournmouth – with people flocking to an exhibition that marks 100 years of the Daily Echo.

Readers and holiday makers can see aspects of life over the last century as glimpses of the past are brought to life.

It’s all part of the newspaper’s centenary celebrations, which include regular supplements in the Echo, and the publication of a book Echoes of the Century.

The exhibition charting development of the town and the newspaper, is at the Pier Cafe.

Photographs dating back to the Daily Echo’s launch in August 1900 right up to the present day have been on display in the cafe since the beginning of this month and will stay there indefinitely.

Editor Neal Butterworth said: “The exhibition is a promotions and newspaper sales effort which sits nicely with our centenary book and monthly publication of picture specials.

“We’re looking at increasing sales on the back of our centenary celebrations and this exhibition is proving popular.

“It’s about the town and its people as well as the newspaper and we’ve has a lot of positive comments about it.”

Echoes of the Century chronicles the history of Bournemouth through past pages of the Daily Echo year-by-year.

Featuring events including the Coronation in 1953 and the solar eclipse of 1999, it gives a comprehensive modern history of the town.
