Editor's job will be givento reader

Readers are to take over the editorship of a Devonshire paper for one week.

The North Devon Journal is inviting readers to take control as part of Local Newspaper Week, which has been organised by the Newspaper Society.

One person, aged between eight and 18, will become editor and an adult reader will work alongside them deciding which stories and pictures they want their staff to work on.

The finished paper will be published on May 17 as a special section inside the main Journal.

The editor will also write a piece about their week as editor which will go in the special edition.

Journal managing editor, Andy Cooper, said: “I am looking forward to putting my feet up for the week as someone else takes responsibility for what goes into the Journal.”

“Seriously, we wanted to do something special to mark Local Newspaper Week, which aims to show everyone just what a valuable role in their communities the regional press can play.”

“What better way to do this than to open our doors and offer two of our readers the chance to be at the very centre of editing their local newspaper?”

Readers now have two weeks to write to the Journal telling them why they would make a good editor. Journal staff will pick a winner shortly afterwards.
