Editor's birthday not quite a "quiet affair"

South Wales Argus editor Gerry Keighley was hoping his 50th birthday would be a quiet affair – but found his colleagues had other ideas.

Gerry arrived at work to find his half-century hadn’t been forgotten, and in fact, staff were keen to mark the occassion in a big way.

He found every door leading into the Argus’ Newport head office plastered with posters, his office decorated with balloons and banners, and a “special” message had been placed in the paper’s family announcements pages.

He was also presented with a series of surprise presents, including a mock-up Argus front page and a cake decorated with a picture of Gerry.

Deputy editor Kevin Ward said: “I think Gerry was hoping to keep this particular milestone as quiet as possible.

“He should know by now that it’s impossible to keep anything quiet in a newspaper office.”
