Kevin Booth, editor of the Peterborough Evening Telegraph, has been appointed editor of the Evening Press, York.
Kevin has been editor at Peterborough for the last three years.
He has held a number of senior positions on daily newspapers, including deputy editor of the Bristol Evening Post. He will take up his new role at the beginning of September.
As well as the four-edition broadsheet Evening Press, Kevin will also take overall editorial responsibility for the Star series, the website www.thisisyork.co.uk and numerous niche publications, including the popular YO1 magazine.
York & County Press publisher Liz Page said today: “Competition for the job has been intense, with some excellent candidates, but Kevin edged ahead of the rest.
“He is an experienced evening paper editor who has lots of ideas for developing the Evening Press whilst retaining its community focus.
“We look forward to welcoming him to Newsquest and to York. The city is changing rapidly and it is important that our products develop to meet the needs of the readers. I am sure Kevin will do a first-class job.”
Kevin began his newspaper career in 1974, working on weekly papers in North Staffordshire until 1980, when he joined the Sentinel in his native Stoke-on-Trent as a reporter.
He became crime reporter and was deputy news editor when he left in 1988 to join the Birmingham Evening Mail.
He rejoined the Sentinel as chief reporter a year later and was deputy sports editor when he left in 1992 to join the Derby Evening Telegraph as deputy news editor.
He became news editor five months later and was appointed assistant editor, under Mike Lowe – who is now editor of the Bristol Evening Post – in May, 1996.
He left Derby in June, 1997, to join Mike at Bristol as assistant editor and was promoted to deputy eight months later.
He was appointed editor at Peterborough in April 2000, taking over from Mike Gilson, who left for Portsmouth.
