Echo's monument to spiritual leaders set to take shape

An appeal in the Liverpool Echo to raise enough cash for a monument to two of the city’s spiritual leaders has hit its target of £60,000.

The newspaper wanted to create a memorial to controversial Church of England bishop David Sheppard and the Catholic archbishop Derek Warlock.

It said both were unassuming men who had made a great contribution to unifying the city.

Echo editor Alastair Machray said: “There has been a fantastic response from so many people who are passionate about creating a legacy to the work of these two inspirational men.

“Now we are here with the money to get the project under way.”

Donations have ranged from a few pounds to several thousand, and have come from individuals, clubs, businesses and local authorities. Many arrived with personal tributes and memories about the two men, and every donor will have their name written in a book.

The appeal is continuing to ensure the best setting and that the statue is maintained for future generations. It is being planned for a spot in view of both cathedrals.
