Echo responds to changing reader habits

The Liverpool Echo will hit the streets tomorrow with a new look Saturday package.

The Weekend Echo has increased its pagination to 92 and will include a 24-page Football Echo in time for the kick-off of the new Premiership season.

The football supplement has been incorporated into the Echo’s Saturday edition in favour of the previous standalone publication which was sold on Saturday evenings.

A jobs supplement will also be included and the main paper will feature an eight-page nostalgia section recalling Merseyside’s past.

Echo editor and editor-in-chief of Trinity Mirror North West and North Wales Mark Dickinson said: “This is a radical change and we believe it will be warmly welcomed by readers.

“We’re recognising that readers’ habits are changing and at the same time giving them an even better package.

“All the research we have done indicates that people’s newspaper buying habits are very different on a Saturday from during the week.

“Many of them go to the supermarket or local shops quite early in the morning before getting on with the rest of their weekend and that is when they want to buy a newspaper.”

The change means the Echo’s publication time will be brought forward so it will be on news stands in time for early shoppers.

Mark said: “Incorporating the ‘pink’ into our new Weekend Echo will mean we can make the excellent writing and photographs that have long been the hallmark of the Football Echo available to a great many more readers.

“Merseyside has an unquenchable thirst for sport and we believe this is the best way to give the fans their weekend fix.

“The Football Echo in its traditional form has had a fantastic run and has been a much-loved product, but the new Weekend Echo represents the best deal for our readers.”
