Echo and Gazette to get new editors

The Sunderland Echo is to get a new editor as Andrew Smith steps aside to concentrate on a new role within the company.

He will become full-time editorial director of Northeast Press Ltd, and will be succeeded by Rob Lawson, editor of the Shields Gazette.

Rob is originally from Sunderland, and has previously worked at the Echo.

The changes will come into effect on August 26.

The Sunderland Echo and Shields Gazette are two of Northeast Press’s evening newspapers, the third being the Hartlepool Mail. Its 11 weekly titles include the Morpeth Herald, Northumberland Gazette, News Guardian and News Post Leader.

Andrew’s role will include having responsibility for policy and standards, developing group editorial services, promotions and marketing and introducing best practice.
