Early return to work for Express staff

A happy Christmas splash turned to a more dramatic front page for staff at the Daventry Express, whose Christmas break was cut short by a murder.

Four journalists returned to work on Boxing Day to cover the story after a man died on Christmas Eve from injuries in a street fight.

Editor David Granger, deputy editor Adam Hollier, photographer Joe Bailey and reporter Amy Olive covered the story.

They went out to interview friends and relatives of the dead man, taking scene photographs, redesigning the front page and covering an emergency magistrates’ court.

David said: “We had a ‘happy’ Christmas splash all subbed and dusted but afriend of the victim called us late on Christmas Eve to tell us the man haddied and a Daventry man was being charged with murder.

“Four of us sacrificed an afternoon’s telly and turkey sandwiches to change the front ready for the CCN production team at Northampton to send it to the printers.”
