Early birds prosper at Lincoln

Word that national papers might be thin on the ground because of the fuel crisis prompted the Lincolnshire Echo to produce an early edition yesterday (Friday).

And early indications show it was a great success.

Deputy editor Richard Bowyer paid tribute to the great team work which saw reporters, subs, newsdesk and sport staff working until 2am so that the paper could be printed soon after 5am and on the streets when newsagents opened at 6am.

Some 20,000 copies were produced featuring all the latest news about fuel supplies at local petrol stations. The facts and figures were all updated again for the city final edition at 2pm.

Richard said: “We’ve had a great week. We’ve not had to lose or condense any editions, and from Monday to Thursday year-on-year our sales were 2.5% up – that’s 700 copies a night.”

The Echo has made sure it has given readers exactly what they wanted with the same breakdown each day of all local petrol stations, supplies, and rules on emergency and priority fuel users.

The team who worked on the early edition were: Acting news editor Mark Charlton; reporters Jason Hippisley, Dan Sharp and Alex Gore; sub editors Chris Hutchins and John Holliday; sports editor Martin Mammatt, Richard Bowyer and editor Mike Sassi.
