Digital Editors' Network brings online journalists together

A new Digital Editors’ Network has been created to allow journalists involved in running media websites to share problems and tips with others doing a similar job.

Nick Turner, head of digital content development at the CN Group, is spearheading the initiative, and the Network last week held its first meeting at the University of Central Lancashire.

Nick told HoldtheFrontPage: “The idea came on the back of discussions with the journalism department at UCLan and people at the Society of Editors.

“Everyone is now staffing up with a web editor or using deputy or assistant editors as champions to push forward online and this will provide a level of discussion from one paper to another about issues such as what software they are using, drivers of traffic or how mediation of message boards works.”

Nick said the Network would allow the “nitty gritty” issues to be discussed via an online blog as well as face-to-face meetings.

Digital editors from a number of regional newspapers as well as the BBC and national newspapers have already expressed their support for the Network, and Nick said it was open to anyone who felt it would be of benefit.

He added: “As with the Society of Editors, we are finding that there is co-operation from one group to the next.

“We are facing common problems across the industry and to respond properly we need to talk openly.”
