It has been revealed that one of Hollywood’s most popular actors started his career working for the Dewsbury Reporter.
Patrick Stewart, best known for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, worked as a junior reporter on the paper in the 1950s.
But his yearning for the stage and screen proved too strong and he chose to pursue his acting career rather than a life of journalism.
The revelation came as Patrick, 60, received an OBE for services to acting in the Queen’s New Years Honours.
Born in Mirfield, the actor has appeared in a number of films and television productions and starred in last year’s blockbuster X-Men.
He is also a respected stage actor and has appeared in a number of Shakespeare plays.
