Deputy editor narrowly misses an egging

Grimsby Telegraph deputy editor Nigel Lowther narrowly missed being “egged” live on television while being interviewed for regional magazine show Calendar News.

He was speaking to Calendar journalist Duncan Wood about the release of Maxine Carr from prison when the eggs began flying.

The missiles were thrown by two men who ran from the direction of a nearby pub and crossed the road to where the broadcast was taking place.

Although Nigel won’t have to put dry cleaning on his next expenses claim, Duncan wasn’t so lucky. He was struck in the head by one egg while others hit his body, causing minor cuts and a bruised head.

Ten minutes earlier, Duncan had to apologise on air after one of the men involved in the later incident shouted foul language on screen behind him as viewers across the Yorkshire Television region watched.

Nigel said later: “I was being interviewed live on regional TV when we were attacked with eggs by two men. They scored a direct hit – on the head – on the presenter but they missed me.

“It was a shocking experience and I was saddened that the actions of two idiots reflect badly on the whole community.”

Presenter Duncan said: “I worked for Calendar and GMTV before that for eight years in this region and have been to Grimsby many times.

“I have always found the people co-operative. Even when we’ve been here in what are testing times with this story, everybody has been most helpful.

“I saw them late and was trying to hand back to Christine (Talbot) in the studio. Then I thought of our viewers and the shock and distress that would have been caused. The priority was to get back on live and reassure them I was all right.”
