Dennis returns to his roots

Dennis Johnstone has joined the Oxford Mail as deputy editor.

He is returning to his roots after a decade in digital media, broadcasting, magazine publishing and strategic planning.

“I’m really excited at the prospect of working with editor Jim McClure and everyone else at Osney Mead as we consolidate the Oxford Mail as one of Britain’s flagship regional dailies,” said Dennis, 35.

“While I’ve enjoyed working at national level, I’ve been keen to return toregional newspaper publishing for some time I’ve missed the newsroomatmosphere, the close relationship with the readership, and the opportunityto tell real stories about real people.”

With a background on Australian regional newspapers, most recently as acting editor, chief sub-editor and news editor, Dennis moved to London about ten years ago.

He spent some time in magazine publishing, and went on to spend three years with BBC Radio 5 Live as website manager.

There he produced the first live radio output made for dedicated webcast during the 1997 Hong Kong handover ceremony, the first radio and web simulcast of a Budget speech, and the first live webcasts of the Ryder Cup, the Wimbledon Championships and the Rugby World Cup.

Dennis is moving to the Bicester area where his partner, Linda Donnelly, is head of English at the Cooper School. They have a 14-month-old son,Fionnlagh.
