Death of sports writer with a "heart of gold"

Sports journalist Allan Bates has died aged 72.

Tamworth-born Allan was one of the area’s most enthusiastic supporters of sport, and was a freelance reporter for the Tamworth Herald for almost 30 years.

In his role he was the driving force behind the Herald’s Wednesday Cricket League and also covered Atherstone Town, Coleshill Town, Tamworth and Atherstone United football clubs – even becoming chairman of Atherstone United for a short time.

In addition to writing about football and cricket for the Herald, he was also known for his radio broadcasting work on Midlands league football.

Former Herald photographer John Walker, who worked with Allan on many occassions, said: “He was a good friend and a very professional colleague.

“For football and cricket, Allan would turn up even if the teams didn’t. He will be sadly missed.”

Former Herald sports editor Bob Patterson also paid tribute to Allan.

He said: “I was just 18 and sports editor at the Herald when I first met Allan.

“I took him on to cover Atherstone Town as they were then known and we have been friends ever since – 34 years.

“Allan was intelligent, witty, sometimes outspoken but he had a heart of gold.

“His passion and commitment not only to local sport but to the arts is unrivalled.

“We shouldn’t mourn his death but celebrate a life in which he touched many people.”

Allan leaves his wife, Beryl, and son, Phil.
