Death of former South Wales editor

Former Carmarthen Journal editor David Edmunds has died. He was 87.

A former Western Mail journalist, David, (pictured right), was editor of the Carmarthen Journal from 1962 to 1984.

Current Journal editor Robert Lloyd said: “The news of the death of David Edmunds comes as a very sad blow.

“I have very fond memories of Mr Edmunds. He was, after all, the editor who gave me my very first job as a cub reporter on the Journal back in 1977.

“He was a very hands-on editor, being fully involved in every part of the newspaper from writing stories to working with printers during the days of hot metal type.

“He was universally regarded with esteem by his fellow journalists.

“It always amused me to listen to his telephone manner. He would invariable answer calls with ‘Edmunds of the Journal’ here.

“Everyone knew who Mr Edmunds was. He was a legend in the world of journalism in South Wales.”

A widower, David is survived by his son, Noel, daughter Janet and his grandchildren.
