Death of former Chronicle reporter

Former regional newspaper journalist Alec Greenhalgh has died aged 68.

He started his journalism career aged 15, as a reporter with the Oldham Evening Chronicle, and later worked for Oldham Press Agency, the Daily Sketch and the Manchester Guardian.

While at the Guardian, Alec covered the troubles in Northern Ireland and Donald Campbell’s ill-fated attempt to break the water speed record on Coniston Water in the Lake District.

He later moved in to broadcasting, joining BBC Radio Manchester (now GMR), and went on to host his own programmes.

He also won a coveted Sony Award as local radio personality of the year.
