Death of a respected photo-journalist

Tributes have been paid to a versatile South Devon photo-journalist who has died from cancer.

George Fitt, 74, spent his life in newspapers and worked for The Times in London before moving to South Devon 26 years ago.

He worked mainly as a photo-journalist for Dartmouth Chronicle.

Friends remember him as a respected and popular man and his funeral service at Torquay Crematorium was well attended.

His brother Ken said: “As a local journalist he wrote fine, lucid prose. He would have been uncomfortable in Fleet Street because he cared for the truth and would not bend it to make a ‘good story’.

“He was both liked and trusted – a rare combination for a journalist.”
