Daily Times hits the USA

An East Anglian newspaper has marked the launch of the first direct passenger airline service between East Anglia and New York by producing a special edition for distribution in New York.

The USA edition of the East Anglian Daily Times is devoted to reassuring Americans that East Anglia is open for business, despite the foot and mouth crisis.

It was handed out aboard the Continental Airlines flight from Stansted Airport to Newark International.

By early afternoon, people in central New York were also able to enjoy the special edition after it was taken over on the Boeing 757, and picture editor Paul Nixon and senior reporter Matthew Lowe distributed them to shoppers, tourists, and police officers in Times Square.

  • The paper contained a message from editor Terry Hunt, telling New Yorkers that the region is safe to visit.

He said: “There is real evidence that many Americans are postponing or even cancelling their trips to Suffolk and Essex because of misconceptions about the foot-and-mouth crisis.

“Their absence represents a devastating blow to the local tourism industry. Hopefully, today’s New York edition of the EADT will help to allay their fears.”

At the Stansted Airport launch of the new flights, Continental Airlines’ vice-president Tim Kennedy hoped American tourists would take the opportunity to visit East Anglia after reading the EADT.

He said: “I think this edition is great and hope we get a lot of New Yorkers coming this way.”
