Cyber cafe for Northampton news headquarters

Ground-breaking new media activities from Northamptonshire Newspapers include an innovative cyber-café in the reception area of the evening paper.

The public computer terminals were set up on the back of the launch of Northantsnews.com, which is being promoted as a community site.

It takes in the Northampton Chronicle & Echo and the Northants Evening Telegraph and can be accessed through the main portal www.northantsnews.com or through their own individual addresses www.northamptonshireeveningtelegraph.co.uk or www.northamptonchronicle.co.uk.

The site links to the Johnston Press web pages and to other sites operated by the group’s newspapers across the country

There are two uniquely designed touch screens – no mouse – and the company charges £2 per hour for users to surf the net. A steady stream of users has made the project a success.

The Northampton new media operation is staffed by a journalist, two web page designers and a sales executive.

And the emphasis is very much on the commmunity – with local organisations being encouraged to add links to their own sites.

Other community groups, the area’s main soccer clubs and some commercial organisations have already added links.
