A judicial review hearing which could decide the fate of the Sunday Mercury journalist being held by the authorities in Pakistan will take place tomorrow.

Amardeep Bassey (left) was detained in the border town of Torkham 12 days ago when he tried to return to Pakistan from Afghanistan and authorities found he did not have the required exit stamp on his visa.

Tomorrow a judge will decide what steps to take, and this could see Amardeep being charged, being held for further questioning, or being released.

“Tomorrow is a very crucial day,” said Sunday Mercury editor David Brookes.

The British Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad and a consular official have now been able to visit Amardeep.

However two Trinity Mirror officials, editorial director Neil Benson, and legal manager Charles Collier-Wright, who have travelled to Pakistan, have been denied access.
