Court reporter death

A well-known Yorkshire court reporter has died aged 81.

Ray Linfoot, formerly of The Star, Sheffield, covered the city’s crime scene for 22 years until his retirement in 1985.

Former editor Michael Corner said: “Ray was very much a journalist from the old school brought up on the round of courts and council, the court area in particular being a speciality throughout his career.

“He was not only an old fashioned journalist but an old fashioned gentleman and will be very much missed by his former colleagues.”

During career he covered magistrates cases, county courts, bankruptcy hearings, juvenile and crown courts.

Prior to his time at The Star he was sports editor at the Derbyshire Times and deputy news editor on the South Yorkshire edition of the Yorkshire Evening Post.

He served in the Navy during the Second World War.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday.
