Counter Attack victim of its own success

The Torquay Herald Express crime campaign Counter Attack, which features a weekly ‘Rogues Gallery’, is becoming a victim of its own success.

Police say criminals are staying away from business premises covered by CCTV cameras following the launch of the paper’s crime initiative.

The weekly Counter Attack feature was launched in June in partnership with local police, and each week pictures taken from CCTV footage are published in the paper with the aim of identifying those wanted for questioning in connection with a series of offences around Torbay.

The initiative has proved so successful that officers have now reported a drying up of caught-in-the-act pictures.

A spokesman said: “We are certainly not getting the number of photo stills we are used to from the premises who normally send.

“In a way that is a desirable state of affairs. We are not going to complain about it.”

  • In its first two weeks of launch, six out of seven individuals featured in Counter Attack were identified.
