Council caught in a tights spot

We’ve all heard how a pair of stockings can come to the rescue of a stranded motorist.

But Southport residents were learning to expect the recent floods to be solved using pairs of tights.

The Southport Visiter reported how flood victims had been told to build sandbags from old pairs of tights and pillowcases because of a shortage of sandbags in the town.

It went on to report how a disc jockey in Australia had picked up the story and was organising a whip-round to send an emergency parcel of women’s tights to Sefton Council chief executive Graham Haywood.

DJ Eddie Andrews told listeners, during a feature on crisis management, that he was “horrified but highly amused” by the council’s attitude.
