Coronation Street – in the Westcountry

As Corrie fever reaches its height, join Emma Slee, of the North Devon Journal, as she takes a stroll down Barnstaple’s very own Coronation Street.

By ‘eck! The street might not be cobbled and that infectious cornet theme tune is missing, but it’s not just any old street.

Coronation Street in Barnstaple lacks the friendly local and corner shop, but is full of its own diverse characters dedicated to Britain’s most popular soap.

And to mark the TV show’s 40th birthday, residents of the terraced houses in Coronation Street off Boutport Street have unleashed a hotpot of tributes to their favourite slice of working class life.

The residents of the 43-house narrow street are mainly elderly and most have been watching the fantasy Street in Weatherfield since the first episode on December 9, 1960.

But there are no signs of a cheery Lancashire-style ‘Ay up’ in this North Devon neighbourhood, as the residents quietly keep themselves to themselves, with a polite “good morning” as they walk past towards the town centre just a short distance away.

The odd cat creeps along the kerbside where cars are parked on both sides of the road (residents only) giving drivers no choice but to crawl along and marvel at North Devon’s very own Coronation Street – one of only two in Devon, the other in Teignmouth.

The world’s longest running TV drama series has seen residents of the 15 houses form friendships, fall out and sleep with one another.
