Class act for Telegraph

More than 500 schools in Northern Ireland are using the Belfast Telegraph as an innovative learning resource as the new school year begins.

The Newspapers in Education initiative, founded last year, invites primary schools to join a programmes where more than 100,000 children study various media forms.

Newspapers in Education executive Jennifer O’Reilly said: “It is through this study that they get the opportunity to look critically at what is presented to them.”

It includes literacy and numeracy projects and a recently-introduced geography based project, Navigators, where pupils ‘travel the world’ with an atlas and table of air miles.

The project was initially programmed for last year’s spring term, but was extended through the summer term because of its success.

The most popular initiative has been the newspaper quiz, held once a term, proving a big hit with thousands of children across Northern Ireland.

Latest figures show that more than 100,000 schoolchildren have used the Belfast Telegraph as a learning resource this year – showing the growing popularity of the Newspapers In Education initiative.

The longest running scheme, The Reading Passport, has been joined by the geography programme, Press Packers, and the Well-Read Newspaper Challenge for post-primary youngsters.
