Citizen links up with student reporters to publish degree work

The Citizen newspaper has joined forces with media students at the University of Gloucestershire to launch a new online project that’s believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

Students of the university’s professional writing and print journalism course have researched and written a series of news stories which are being published on The Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo’s website: thisisgloucestershire.co.uk.

They can write on any subject of their choice as long as it is news worthy and local to Gloucestershire.

Their virtual “edition” will be updated every two weeks and can be found at:
thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/studentreporters.

All the published material will count towards the students final degrees.

The scheme came about after The Citizen’s assistant editor Matt Holmes gave a series of talks about journalism to the university’s media students.

He said: “The University of Gloucestershire has around 9,500 students all living locally and this seemed an ideal way to tap into that community and do something for the journalism students as well.

“The students did really well with their first batch of stories and we are looking forward to expanding the scheme to include features, reviews, big interviews and possibly a student podcast at a later stage as well.”
