Chronicle MD in line for presidency role

Barnsley Chronicle managing director Sir Nicholas Hewitt looks set to become the next vice-president of the Newspaper Society.

Sir Nicholas, who is also chairman of the Chronicle, has been put forward for the role by the Newspaper Society’s Council.

He will succeed Stephen Parker, managing director of Trinity Mirror’s regional newspapers, who will in turn take over from the current president, John Robertson.

A new vice-president is elected from the Newspaper Society membership every year, and they serve as vice-president for one year before taking on the role of president.

Both roles will come into effect on July 1 if they are approved at next month’s Society AGM.

Sir Nicholas has been chairman and managing director of Barnsley Chronicle Holdings Ltd since 1973.

He is also a member of the Independent Publishers’ Forum and has previously acted as president of the Yorkshire Newspaper Society and chairman of the Regional Newspaper Advertising Bureau, the Yorkshire Newspaper Press Awards, and the Quality Weekly Newspaper Promotional Group.
