Chronicle coverage provides inspiration for Private Eye

Essex Chronicle coverage of problems at Chelmsford’s Broomfield Hospital has resulted in a mention in the legendary columns of Private Eye.

The article in the national magazine, famed for its scathing satire and insight into politics, business and public organisations, slammed the effects of Mid Essex Hospitals Trust’s decision to cut back on secretarial and PA jobs.

The Chronicle’s coverage of the issue highlighted concerns of patients, their relatives and hospital staff about the hospital’s administration system being thrown into chaos, with appointments, follow up letters and test results all affected.

Consultant James Kellerman had contacted the Essex Chronicle to express his fears about patients being put at risk.

The Private Eye article said: “That risk was acknowledged by the hospital when, amid mounting concern in the Essex Chronicle, the trust sent 1,400 tapes of consultants’ letters and other material to an agency for typing.”
