Chronicle celebrates region's top schools

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle is celebrating the outstanding work being done in classrooms across the region with its first Super Schools Awards.

Fifteen schools in the area were praised in a recent Ofsted report, and the Chronicle has chosen five that it feels deserve extra recognition on top of that.

Chief Inspector of Schools Mike Tomlinson said: “I am delighted the Evening Chronicle has decided to recognise through its own awards scheme the achievements of schools in its area that have been named as particularly successful in my annual report on education standards in England.

“I applaud the Newcastle Evening Chronicle’s support of these successful local schools and hope next year the list will be even longer.”

Representatives from the five winning schools will be presented with trophies at a VIP reception at the Chronicle’s offices.

Chronicle editor Alison Hastings said: “It’s great to be able to give schools a pat on the back.

“We know the Ofsted report is just one of the measures to show how a school is doing and it cannot be taken as the whole picture, but it is helpful for parents to know the specific standards at a school.”

Only schools inspected during the last academic year were eligible to feature in the Ofsted report, and therefore in the Chronicle awards.
