Celebrations mark paper's 275th birthday

The Salisbury Journal, the third oldest weekly newspaper in Britain, is marking its 275th birthday this year with special supplements and events.

The celebrations began with an issue containing a 16-page supplement including messages from the Queen and the city’s MP.

As well as giving readers an insight into the history of the Journal the supplement also carried advance notice of special competitions planned during the birthday year.

They include the Journal People Awards, a scheme designed to pay tribute to the unsung heroes and heroines who live within the Journal’s circulation area.

Readers, local companies, schools and clubs will be invited to nominate someone from the community they feel deserves public recognition.

Bill Browne, publisher of Salisbury Newspapers, told readers: “In producing this 16-page birthday announcement we are heralding the start of a year of celebrations which we hope you will feel part of.

“Throughout 2004 we will be reminding you of years gone by and inviting you to share your memories of links with the Journal.”

Details of the birthday celebrations are also included on the Salisbury Newspapers Website at thisissalisbury.co.uk.

There’s also a special mini movie on the homepage, designed by Salisbury College, to mark the celebration year.
