Celebrating the newspaper industry

The chance to promote the role of the regional press is just around the corner during Local Newspaper Week – from May 14 to 20.

The annual event is organised by the Newspaper Society to provide a platform for papers to show the vital role they play in their local communities.

It as raises awareness and celebrates the success of the regional and local press.

Press packs are being sent to regional and local newspapers to provide articles, press releases and facts and figures to boost coverage.

Last year’s event saw hundreds of newspapers run articles, features, double-page spreads, supplements, competitions and special community events based around Local Newspaper Week.

Newspaper Society director David Newell said: “The event inspired newspaper teams across all departments to celebrate their papers with a range of exciting creative ideas.”

This year the event offers a chance for papers to enter for two editorial awards. The Press Gazette Regional Press Awards 2000 hosts a Local Newspaper Week award in its ‘team’ category.

This award is for the best article, feature, series or supplement to appear in a regional newspaper on the role of Britain’s regional press.

The Prince’s Trust Local Reporting Award can be entered by a young person from a local community or a young reporter, and covers a newspaper article with an inspiring local community theme.

The story must be published during Local Newspaper Week and newspapers must submit their nominated articles to the Prince’s Trust by the May 29.
