Casino bid question prompts record phone poll result

The Birmingham Mail has had its biggest-ever response to the daily phone poll that runs in the paper.

It wanted to know whether readers would like a super-casino licensing application at a new stadium for Birmingham City FC – or one to be created at the National Exhibition Centre.

The Mail turned to its readers for their views on one of the hottest topics in the city – and was overwhelmed by the massive response.

More than 3,400 people rang the paper’s hotline in less than 24 hours and 75 per cent of them supported the Blues’ proposals to build a super-casino and stadium in Saltley.

The margin was impressive – 2,559 votes for the Blues and 864 for the NEC’s proposal.

Deputy editor Carole Cole said: “The response from readers was fantastic. It proves we are in touch with readers on issues that matter to them.

“The Birmingham Mail has repeatedly urged councillors to decide quickly whether to back Blues’ bid or that drawn up by the NEC.

“Now that the people of the city have had their say, there is no excuse for delay.”
