Zoo quest nets £100,000

A campaign run by the Jersey Evening Post and Jersey Zoo has reached its £100,000 target less than a year after its launch.

The Buy a Reed appeal aims to restore a wetland valley into a habitat suitable for wildlife and flowers by asking people to buy a reed at a cost of £10 each.

Phragmite reeds are an important part of the valley and help keep the water supply clean.

The appeal was launched last March and raised £3,000 in its first week.

It was helped by a generous donation from the late islander Thomas Kidd and successful sales of the reeds over Christmas.

Zoo development director Paula Harris said: “We would like to say a huge thank-you to the people of Jersey and the Jersey Evening Post for their generosity, enthusiasm and support they have shown for the reed campaign.”
