YEP campaign boosts donor register

New figures from the National Blood Service have shown that a campaign by the Yorkshire Evening Post has boosted the number of potential bone marrow donors.

Since a coupon was launched in the paper last month as part of the Yorkshire Evening Post-Alice Maddocks campaign, nearly 2,000 people have joined the Bone Marrow Registry in the north of England.

A spokesman for the National Blood Service said: “This is way above what we would normally expect. The Yorkshire Evening Post and the Maddocks family have had a big impact on the number of people coming forward as potential donors.

“Last year we had 18,000 new people over 12 months – in the last three weeks we have had almost 2,000, which is amazing.”

  • This week the Maddocks family secured a personal guarantee from Prime Minister Tony Blair that the Bone Marrow Registry would be revamped.

During an hour-long meeting Mr Blair said funding would not be an obstacle and agreed to set recruitment targets of between 30,000 and 40,000 new donors each year.
