Who killed Phil? Post steps in to help solve murder mystery

The South Wales Evening Post has stepped in to offer its support to the investigation into the death of a well-known local tramp.

The body of Neath man Phillip Jones – known locally as Phil the Tramp – was found two weeks ago near the hut where he lived, and in a bid to find out how he died the paper has launched a poster campaign appealing for information.

Posters featuring a photograph of the man, and asking if anyone knew him or had been to his ‘home’, have been printed by the paper and handed to the police to distribute.

The dead man had been a popular character in the area, with local traders regularly giving him food, cups of tea, wine and cigars, and since his death the Evening Post has given extensive coverage to the case.

Editor Spencer Feeney said: “The paper has an important role to play within the community and I am delighted we are able to help police in some small way.

“We will do anything we can to assist the authorities in this matter.”

Police, who have launched a murder hunt, say the 66-year-old tramp died from serious head injuries.

Hundreds of callers have already swamped specially set-up incident room phone lines and police have also launched a roadside questionnaire near to where the man died.

It is now hoped the Evening Post’s campaign will help the investigation further.

Two men have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, but both have been released on bail pending inquiries.
