We Care hope for Lottery cash

An appeal to raise money to support carers in Norfolk has been promised support in the House of Lords.

Shirley Williams has pledged to raise support in Parliament for any fresh bid to unlock Lottery cash for the Eastern Daily Press We Care Appeal.

The peer has told the paper she would be willing to muster support from her Liberal democrat colleagues and the influential independent ‘crossbenchers’.

Current legislation means that the National Lottery could not give money to endowment trusts like We Care, even if it wanted to.

On a visit to Norwich, Lady Williams said: “I was not aware that you couldn’t get Lottery money if you have a endowment. It seems to be daft because endowments are a very common form of raising money for charity.

“Certainly I would support a Bill if that proposes an amendment along those lines.

“I would also encourage my Liberal democrat colleagues to do that in the Lords and Commons.”

The fund has brought in £570,000 so far and would reach its £1m target more quickly with the injection of Lottery cash.
