Tribute to spitfire workers

Support is flooding in for the Southampton Daily’s Echo’s campaign for a Spitfire memorial.

The paper is calling for the city council to erect a permanent tribute to the war plane which was built at the Supermarine factory in Woolston.

The issue was raised by Squadron Leader Jones, of the Southamption Hall of Aviation, and the Echo was quick to back his efforts.

Since then, the paper has been inundated with readers calling in to give their support.

Amongst them is Richard Griffiths, whose sister was killed by a German bomb as she walked home from her job at the factory.

He explained: “It’s a crying shame. Everyone who was in the war blows their own trumpet except Britain.

“Even at present day level there’s no memorial to us chaps who were in the second world war.”
