Treatment a step closer

A 13-year-old cancer patient is closer to being sent to America for revolutionary treatment thanks to the readers of the Derbyshire Times.

The Times launched the campaign to raise the £40,000 needed to send David Hatton for the treatment in June.

Only two weeks after the appeal was launched, £12,000 has been raised, with one reader who wished to remain anonymous, donating £5,000.

Fund-raisers collected £40,000 for his first round of treatment, which cured David of the rare cancer, neuroblastoma, in his shin bone and pelvis, but doctors in Texas found traces of the disease in his bone marrow.

Fundraisers now face a battle against the clock to raise the rest, as he is due back in America on June 5, a number of events have already been organised including a jumble sale and a concert.
