Top legion award for the Mercury

A campaign to remember the fallen of two world wars has been recognised by the Royal British Legion, which has presented its highest honour to the Leicester Mercury.

The paper has received the first friend of the Royal British Legion award to be presented in the county.

The honour came after Legion members nominated the paper because of its 11-11-11 campaign, which asked businesses and individuals to observe the two-minute silence on November 11.

Legion county chairman Tony Griffiths said: “The publicity which the Mercury has given has been fantastic.

“When we first started the 11-11-11 campaign I was shocked people were not observing the silence.

“Now, thanks to the continued support of the Mercury, support has snowballed. It has played a big part in bringing it home to the young people in particular.”

Mercury editor Nick Carter said: “The Leicester Mercury is very proud to have received this award and very pleased to hear our campaign has made a difference.”

He paid tribute to the support of Mercury readers.
