Think bike!

The potential dangers of life on a motorbike were brought into focus by Evening Press reporter David Wiles, who joined an advanced motorcyclist for a spin on the road.

He made the trip along north Yorkshire’s highways and byways as part of the paper’s Arrive Alive campaign.

The journey by bike is an adventure compared to the more sedate safety of a car but has its own risks.

He said: “Until you leave the comfort and safety of four wheels for the freedom and excitement of two, you can have little ideas of the number of potential dangers on our roads.

“They can be a minor annoyance or moderate hazard to the average car driver but encounter one on a motorcycle and it could spell real trouble.”

David was in safe hands for his trip, riding pillion with former motorcycle policeman Peter Gledhill, who is vice president of the York Advanced Motorcyclists.

The campaign is highlighting the death toll of motorcyclists on North Yorkshire roads each year. In the past year, 15 motorcyclists have been killed and 134 seriously injured on the region’s roads.

North Yorkshire Police, which runs its own safety scheme, has given its support to the campaign – hoping the publicity will help cut the casualties.
