Telegraph urges readers to bank their brass

The Derby Evening Telegraph has launched a campaign to persuade its readers to keep their cash in a bank or building society, rather than at home.

Backed by Derbyshire police, the campaign follows two appalling crimes where local pensioners were robbed of thousands of pounds from their homes.

The paper’s message: Beat the burglars – bank your brass, is aimed not just at the older generation, but also at their relatives.

Harold Cox, chairman of Southern Derbyshire Pensioners’ Association, said: “A lot of elderly people keep money at home because they don’t trust banks. It’s essential that the younger generation encourage their elders to make sure their cash is safe by putting it in a bank or building society.”

One elderly victim, who had £4,000 stolen from her home said: “I think that this campaign by the Evening Telegraph is very good – people need to be warned about the dangers of keeping large amounts of money at home.”

  • Since reports of the two thefts appeared in the Telegraph, readers have sent in almost £400 for the victims.
