Telegraph targets fine dodgers as successful campaign is revived

Offenders who owe cash in outstanding fines and court fees are once again being named and shamed by the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

The newspaper has this week revived its campaign – and four people who owed money to North Lincolnshire Magistates’ Court have already made arrangements to pay their fines after a 21-strong ‘wanted’ list appeared in the paper.

The Telegraph originally launched the campaign last year, and after just one day the special hotline set up to deal with information had received 10 calls – while one fine dodger walked into court and paid his fine in full.

But a staff shortage at the court meant the campaign had to be abandoned – until now.

Editor Jon Grubb said he was happy to revive the campaign, and said he was pleased it was already getting results.

He said: “The offenders have been found guilty and should therefore pay what they owe.

“Unfortunately the court has been unable to release a list of details for several months, but we are keen to revive the campaign and shame more offenders into paying up.”

The list will now be published every three months and anyone with information is asked to call a special 24-hour hotline. Civilian enforcement officers will then follow-up the information.

The offenders on the list owe money for a variety of reasons ranging from fines to compensation for victims.
