Survey leads to cards blitz

Shops, doctors’ surgeries, libraries and other public places are being urged by the Basildon Evening Echo to stock organ donor cards.

A survey has found that the majority of public places in South Essex no longer stock the cards, and do not realise it is their responsibility to order them.

The parents of Rachel Middleton, who died after waiting two years for a transplant, have called for urgent action in light of the findings, and suggested the government fund regular mailshots.

Rachel’s dad, Steve, said: “I have got a card but, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t know where to go to get one. If things are not working at the moment, then something has to be done.

“The Government should fund this fully. Anything that promotes awareness of organ donation is a good thing and should be supported.”
