Support mounts for Echo's call to End the Carnage

The Daily Echo in Southampton has received more than 2,000 pledges of support from readers to its End the Carnage on the A36 campaign.

The introduction of speed cameras, reduced limits, filter lanes and flashing warning lights are what’s being called for to improve the deadly two-mile stretch of road that runs through Wellow and Plaitford.

A public meeting encouraged a further 1,000 people to add their signatures to the petition and following the deaths of two regulars of The Shoe Inn in October 2000, around 200 patrons added their names to the growing list of supporters.

The backing doesn’t end there – with Romsey MP Sandra Gidley and Test Valley councillor John Lewis also pledging their support and pushing forward in their promise to put some changes into action.

The weight of public opinion to this campaign is forcing MPs and local politicians to respond and put pressure on the Highways Agency to end the delays installing new safety measures on one of the most dangerous roads in Hampshire.
