Start-a-Heart to save a life

The Evening Post Start-A-Heart Appeal to buy 25 life-saving defibrillators has enjoyed a good start – and a great leap forward – with one of Nottingham’s main shopping centres installing two of the machines.

The campaign will also raise awareness of how to use the equipment, which delivers an electric shock to help restore a regular heart beat in heart attack victims.

The paper has been examining how the machines and their use has developed in this country and focused on people who owe their lives to their use.

And now the Victoria Centre, in the heart of the city, has become the first public place to get the machines.

The two portable models will be available around the clock in the centre and surrounding area.

Twelve security guards have been trained to use them, and the guards can be alerted by the ambulance service after a 999 call and be at a patient’s side in seconds.

Centre spokeswoman Liz Sewell said: “By putting defibrillators in the centre we know we can possibly save someone’s life.

“The cost is not important – these machines are priceless for our customers.”
