Star plea for work on infamous bypass

The Sheffield Star has launched a petition to improve a by-pass which claimed the lives of two local boys.

The four-year-olds were killed when the BMW their mother was driving collided with a lorry at Stocksbridge.

The campaign comes after the bypass, dubbed “a major trunk road built on the cheap”, claimed the lives of 24 people since opening in 1998.

The petition was organised by mums from the same nursery as the youngsters and is being taken to the Government – which will have the final say on whether the by-pass can be improved.

Parents and staff at the nursery were devastated at the loss of the children. A mother whose sons attend the nursery said: “Enough is enough, something has to be done before any others die on that road.”

“The nursery is planting a tree and putting a plaque up in memory of the boys and if their deaths do prompt improvements to the road that will be something else done in memory of them, something which will make a huge difference.”

The Star said work was long overdue on the infamous by-pass and it had taken 14 years for anything to be done.

Campaigners hope to present Transport Minister John Spillar with the petition containing thousands of names asking for the road to be improved.
