Shopper calls to Cancel Tax

The News Shopper is bidding to put an end to spiralling local tax bills with the launching of its Cancel Tax campaign.

Together with its sister newspapers across London and the Home Counties, the News Shopper is calling for a cut in council taxes in 2005.

The newspaper has been reporting on council tax rises of more than 50 per cent in just six years, and has now pledged to put pressure on every politician, bureaucrat and Government minister who can make a difference and hit back at the soaring costs.

it is also encouraging its readers to get in touch and voice their concerns in a bid to demonstrate the strength of feeling on this subject.

Launching the campaign, it said: “The Government might bleat about increased funding and councils may pass the buck back claiming the money has all gone to the north — political point-scoring and bickering is not our concern.

“Quite simply we are sick of paying through the nose and want something done.

“We are not blaming council finance bosses, the councillors who run the borough, the Mayor or even our MPs.

“We do not care who is responsible, we just want someone to act and end these sky-high bills.”
