A Save Our School campaign, supported by the Derby Evening Telegraph, has come to a head.

More than 2,000 people opposed to the closure of a Derby secondary school have signed a petition, which has now been handed to the local city council.

Local boy Kieran Mooney delivered the petition of signatures, collected by parents who formed a Save Our School group, to the council, along with more than 300 completed coupons that appeared in the Derby Telegraph.

Derby City Council is threatening to close Village Community School because the city has a large number of surplus school places.

It has been suggested that the school’s 500 pupils would transfer to two nearby schools.

Dozens of letters have also been given to Andrew Flack, the council’s education director, to meet the December 31 deadline for objections to the proposal.

Mr Flack said: “We thank the parents for these and we will take them into account when considering the situation.”
