Save our gardens!

An entire class of infants put pen to paper to back the Bournemouth Daily Echo’s appeal to save the Winter Gardens.

The six and seven-year-olds wrote in support of the campaign after taking part in the Bournemouth JC2000 celebrations recently.

The pupils of St Clement’s and St John’s Infant School in Bournemouth told how they had enjoyed performing and watching others.

One pupil wrote: “Dear Echo, I am Bethany and I’m six. I want you to know that I don’t want you to shut down the Winter Gardens. It can be used for loads of things.”

“Please! Please! Don’t close the Winter Gardens. It’s a good place to have concerts,” said six-year-old Aphra.

The future of the Gardens, which have played host to stars such as Bob Hope, Queen and Elton John, has been in the balance for a number of years.

The campaign to save the Winter Gardens started about three months ago.

Echo news editor Andy Martin said: “We decided to see what the community felt about the future of the Winter Gardens.

“There has been a phenomenal response. We have had more letters on this issue than anything else.”

Bournemouth Borough Council was due to discuss proposals about the future of the Winter Gardens next week but have put off the meeting so that they can launch a consultation about the issue.

The Echo published 2,000 coupons inviting people to back their campaign and has so far received more than 1,600 coupons.
